# Create a Department Category Attribute

Creating a department category attribute is great for business who sells a large variety of products. With this attribute, you will be able to assign specific departments to categories and generate reports based on departments.

1. Navigate to [manage.acadiapos.com](https://manage.acadiapos.com) for **Retail** or [rfsm.acadiapos.com](https://rfsm.acadiapos.com) for **Restaurant**

2. Click "Items"

3. Click "View Categories"

4. Click "Category Attributes"

5. Click "New Category Attribute"

6. In the field under **ATTRIBUTE CODE(E.G., DRIVERS_LICENSE)** enter the code **department.**

7. In the field under **ATTRIBUTE NAME**, enter the name **Department** or the name you want to appear to the user.

8. From the drop-down menu under **CUSTOM ATTRIBUTE TYPE**, select **String**.

9. From the drop-down menu under **FRONTEND INPUT TYPE**, choose **Select**.

10. An additional field will appear where you can press **+ Add New** to add the names of the departments that you want the user to choose from.

11. Enter a department name

**Example**

Value all lowercase you would put **mens**

Label Uppercase first letter if you choose, **Mens**

Do the same for however departments/sections of the store/business you want to add.

Value all lowercase you would put **womens**

Label Uppercase first letter if you choose, **Womens**

12. Now when you create a category you will be able to select if you choose to do so,

or

When you go to EDIT an already preexisting category by clicking the blue pen next to the category name, you can also toggle there as well.

13. In the field under **UI COLUMN SIZE IN POS**, enter a value from **1-12**. This value represents how wide the field is going to be and should be based on how many characters the average response will require. The most common values for Department Category Attributes are between 3 and 6.

14. Click "Save Changes"
